Custom Stone
Fireplace Surrounds

Medford, Oregon — Fabricated In-House

A stone fireplace surround is one of the most striking design features a room can have. StoneTech custom-fabricates fireplace surrounds, hearths, and mantels in granite, marble, quartzite, and more — creating a focal point that defines the entire space.

fireplace surrounds

The fireplace is the architectural anchor of a room — and the surround is what makes it extraordinary. StoneTech fabricates custom stone fireplace surrounds for wood-burning, gas, and electric fireplaces throughout Medford and Southern Oregon. Every surround is digitally templated at your home, fabricated in-house at our Medford facility, and professionally installed by our own crew.

From a clean contemporary slab surround to a traditional multi-piece design with a decorative mantel shelf, we fabricate fireplace surrounds in any style, any material, and any configuration — precisely fitted to your fireplace opening and room dimensions.

Stone Materials for Fireplace Surrounds

Natural stone is the ideal material for fireplace surrounds — heat-resistant, durable, and timelessly beautiful. Here are our top recommendations.

TOP RECOMMENDATION – HEAT RESISTANT

GRANITE

Our most popular fireplace surround material. Granite's exceptional heat resistance makes it perfectly safe near open flames. Available in hundreds of natural patterns from subtle speckle to dramatic flowing movement — and looks stunning in both contemporary and traditional interiors.

CLASSIC ELEGANCE — TIMELESS CHOICE

MARBLE

Marble has defined luxury fireplace surrounds for centuries. As a lower-traffic surface, a fireplace surround is one of the best places to use marble — you get all the elegance and beauty without the wear concerns of a kitchen application. Carrara, Calacatta, and Nero Marquina are perennial favourites.

MARBLE LOOK, GREATER DURABILITY

QUARTZITE

Quartzite delivers the dramatic marble-like veining that homeowners love — with greater hardness and durability. An excellent choice for those who want a bold, statement fireplace surround with natural stone character.

WARM, ORGANIC CHARACTER

TRAVERTINE

Travertine's warm cream and gold tones bring an organic, Old World warmth to a fireplace surround. Its natural texture and patina make it a popular choice for rustic, Mediterranean, and transitional interior styles.

HISTORIC AMERICAN CHOICE

SOAPSTONE

Soapstone has been used in American fireplaces for centuries — and for good reason. Its exceptional heat resistance (it actually absorbs and radiates heat), naturally non-porous surface, and rich dark character make it an outstanding choice for fireplace hearths and surrounds alike.

NOT RECOMMENDED NEAR DIRECT HEAT

NO QUARTZ

Engineered quartz is not recommended for fireplace surrounds. The resin binders can be damaged by sustained high temperatures from open flames or radiant heat. Always use natural stone for fireplace applications — our team will guide you to the right choice for your specific fireplace type.

Fireplace Surround Design Styles

StoneTech fabricates fireplace surrounds across the full range of design aesthetics — from spare contemporary to ornate traditional.

CONTEMPORARY/MINIMAL

Clean lines, full-slab surround faces, and flush hearths — no moulding, no fuss. Dark granite or white marble in a polished or honed finish. Suited to modern and transitional interiors.

TRADITIONAL/CLASSIC

Multi-piece surrounds with pilasters, mantel shelves, and decorative profiled edges. Marble in Carrara or Calacatta, or travertine with honed finish. Timeless and refined.

RUSTIC/ORGANIC

Leathered or brushed granite with a raw, textural quality. Travertine with unfilled finish for natural variation. Earthy tones that complement wood beams and warm interiors.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What stone is best for a fireplace surround?

Granite and marble are the most popular choices. Granite is our top recommendation for its exceptional heat resistance, durability, and wide range of natural patterns. Marble is the classic choice for elegant, lower-traffic fireplace surrounds — particularly for gas and electric fireplaces. Quartzite, travertine, and soapstone are also excellent options. Engineered quartz is not recommended near direct heat sources.

Can StoneTech fabricate a custom fireplace hearth in Medford?

Yes. StoneTech fabricates custom stone fireplace hearths — flush, raised, or extended — in granite, marble, quartzite, travertine, and soapstone. All hearths are digitally templated at your home for a precise fit and professionally installed by our Medford team for wood-burning, gas, and electric fireplaces.

Can engineered quartz be used near a fireplace?

No. Engineered quartz is not recommended for fireplace surrounds or hearths. The resin binders used in quartz manufacturing can be damaged by sustained high temperatures from open flames or radiant heat. StoneTech always recommends natural stone — granite, marble, quartzite, travertine, or soapstone — for all fireplace surround applications.

What finishes are available for stone fireplace surrounds?

StoneTech offers polished, honed, and leathered finishes for fireplace surrounds. A honed or leathered finish is particularly popular for fireplace surrounds as it gives a more matte, sophisticated look that complements both contemporary and traditional interiors. Our team can show you finish samples at our Medford showroom.
